Vintage Edwardian Revival Essex Glass Floral Oval Brooch
Gorgeous vintage Edwardian revival Essex glass oval brooch from the 1940's. It features a colorful blue, pink and yellow thistle bouquet in the center and a thistle garland on each side of it.
Most of the original Essex crystal jewelry was made in the late 1800's to early 1900's. It is often referred to as "reverse crystal jewelry". A clear crystal is cut as a cabochon and then carved on its flat side like an intaglio. It is then painted and a thin layer of mother of pearl added to produce a three dimensional pearlescent iridescent effect. This brooch was produced with the same technique but with glass not rock crystal as costume jewelry in the 1940s .
This brooch is made with a brass gold tone metal with a bezel around the glass and finished with a C clasp.
It is in very good vintage condition, with a barely visible tiny chip to the glass on one side.
This exquisite floral brooch would make a great Spring gift!
